Taste
Open your door to an urban village lifestyle, rich in colour, culture and a smorgasboard of wonderful cuisines. Sydney’s Inner West is the home of the ultimate coffee experience, impromptu street theatre and warm neighbourhood encounters where trend and tradition share a fruity glass of red, or a boutique beer with a wedge of woodfired pizza. Bellissimo.
If the Harbour beckons, wander over to the Balmain peninsula, nestled snug in a world of sandstone and slate. The meandering streets and lanes will lead you to the water’s edge. Catch a ferry to the city to start your working day.
Across the water, stately federation homes and generous parklands watch the boats go by on Iron Cove Bay. Kayak in the early morning, ride your bike along the foreshore, or take the Bay Run in your stride.
Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
You can’t live in the Inner West without sampling its culinary riches, and there are plenty of those. But the whole experience is bigger than the sum of its parts. Apart from the food, the pleasure of eating has much to do with just being part of the urban village. The streets are alive, buzzing without being bustling, and wherever you go it just feels like a great place to be.
For a variety of tastes and exciting cuisines, head to the newly revamped Rozelle Tramsheds between Glebe and Annandale at the edge of the Harold Park development. An amazing transformation of the once derelict tram depot and an historic site where the old meets the new. Fittingly, you can even get there by Light Rail, alight at Jubilee Park.
Here are a few of my other favourite, hand-picked eateries:
Bar Italia on Norton Street, Leichhardt. You won’t find gelato to compare anywhere in Sydney. The Buyers Domain’s office is just down the road – I’m there all to often.
Café Giulia in Chippendale serves up sensational breakfasts and coffees. An institution.
Emma’s Snack Bar, Enmore – great for healthy, tasty Lebanese food. Love the low key location, and so does everyone else, it seems. Definitely worth a look.
BYO and head to Pomegranate in Balmain. The locals fill this Thai restaurant nightly. The food is delectable, the service efficient and the atmosphere is fun. A must.
Petersham Charcoal Chicken – definitely not haute cuisine, but who cares. The perfect take-home dinner for when you couldn’t be bothered cooking. Good price, great taste. Beware, it’s addictive.
Grappa Ristorante E Bar in Leichhardt strikes the perfect balance between sophisticated Italian food, a fabulous wine list, flawless service and an ambient warmth that transports you to your happy place.
Easy Riding
A light rail trip beats being parked in traffic. Central via Pyrmont, Glebe, Annandale and Lilyfield. Plenty of good living in these suburbs, if budget permits. New stations in Leichhardt, Haberfield, Lewisham and Dulwich Hill. From Balmain to Burwood and Stanmore to Strathfield, the Inner West thrives on proximity to the CBD, good eating, great shopping, parks, walks and bike tracks, bars, old-time cinema and some of the country’s leading schools, universities and hospitals.
And when you live in the Inner West, you’re never far from where you need to be. So even if you commute to work, to Silverwater or Parramatta, Bella Vista or North Ryde, it’s shorter and more direct from the Inner West.
Architectural Delights
Like everything else on the Inner West ‘menu’, the choice of residential properties is a wide array of styles and eras, though the common theme is undoubtedly one of timeless character. They say that the history and culture of a suburb is written in bricks and mortar. If that’s the case, then the Inner West certainly tells a lively tale of terraces, semis, warehouse conversions, Californian bungalows, weatherboard workers’ cottages, Gothic inspired mansions, Victorian, Edwardian, Italianate and art deco. And like the menu at a good restaurant, you probably won’t be able to make up your mind…
You need a buyers agent inner west
Much as I love the Inner West, you can go wrong, even horribly wrong, if you don’t know what you’re doing – and I wouldn’t rely on the local real estate agent for advice. A few of the local realities you’d rather know BEFORE you buy include: the flight path that might be directly above you; a number of definite no-go arterial roads that you don’t want to be anywhere near and new infrastructure projects. These are all factors likely to affect capital growth and impact upon the investment choice.
“We had been looking at purchasing an investment property in Sydney, particularly Inner West for 2 years. Having been losing bidder a number of times and becoming quite disheartened with the process we engaged Nick Viner from Buyers Domain.
We met with Nick, gave him our brief and he began looking for properties immediately. Nick showed us four properties and had secured one within weeks of our first meeting. We believe it was Nicks negotiating skills and knowledge of true values in a ‘hot’ Sydney market that ensured our success.
Nick was then able to introduce us to solicitors in Sydney and tradesmen to assist after settlement.
Nick’s honesty, integrity and communication to us were second to none. We would highly recommend Buyers Domain to anyone seeking property especially in this market.”

A Close Study
When I weigh up value-for-money against the values that money can’t buy, the Inner West still comes out considerably ahead of its pricier competition on the North Shore and Eastern Suburbs. But I have to stress the importance of knowing where to buy, when to buy, what to look for, what you can afford to overlook, and what you absolutely can’t.
